West Herts Hockey Club News story

Alan Darvill RIP

24 Jun 2022

Another of the Club's past legends has passed away.

Alan was a playing member for some forty years, appearing for all teams from the 1st XI, skippering the 2nd XI and carrying out myriad tasks off the field to aid the running of the club.

Among these were racking up the match balls on a Monday night and painting them with white gloss- something remembered and assisted by his son Ralph.

He also put his building skills to good use every August as he repaired the goal frames ready for the season.

Off the pitch he was a bar regular, always happy to partake of some Brakspear's bitter and chew over the day's game...and there are many stories of the post match antics of him and his team mates which would raise a few eyebrows these days!

He started out as a goalie before turning things on their head by becoming a very sharp centre forward- the words "combative", "no nonsense" and "direct" have been applied to his style, and there was never a lost cause ball that couldn't be steered goalwards.

Many fond remembrances have been passed on to his family, including from players of a younger generation for whom he was an inspiration as they set out in the adult game.

Funeral arrangements will be posted here as soon as they are known.

The badge comes from one of his old playing shirts.
