I hope you've now recovered from the season and the club dinner!
In my role as “Head of Coaching”, one of my key jobs is to grow our coaching provision in terms of both the number of coaches and their skills. It’s an area that is hugely important to the future of any sports club and one we therefore need to invest into.
It’s also an extremely rewarding thing to do. Not only will your hockey benefit from it, but you can also develop skills that can apply in all parts of life, for example: creative thinking, problem-solving, public speaking, having difficult conversations, building a culture, and many more. The really good news is that it’s now extremely easy (lots of online content) and cheap (sometimes free) to take a first step into coaching.
So, if you are entirely new to coaching, but want to see if it’s for you, here are three ways you can dip your toe in the water:
- Create a login at England Hockey’s Hockey Hub. This is England Hockey’s base for everything on coaching, from courses to introductory videos, frameworks and ideas for exercises and small-sided games that can help with ideas for sessions. And this is the main coaching page
- Sign up for a course through England Hockey
- Drop me an email at kiran_kick@hotmail.com about getting involved in helping out or observing a training session at West Herts over the summer or the new season
In time, I’d love for us to build up a thriving coaching community at the club, which will make it even more enjoyable and mean we can help each other learn and grow our skills. For now though, please consider if it’s something you feel you could contribute to. There are opportunities for all ages and levels of experience to help or lead.
Finally, for younger aspiring leaders, those in current school years 9 and above (years 10-13 in the 2026-27 season), can join our Leadership Award course at the club on Saturday 11th July, from 9:45am to 4:15pm. The day is a mixture of indoor and outdoor time, comprising group discussions, videos and presentations indoor, as well as practical coaching and umpiring practice on the pitch.
